Moving on After Trauma

Moving on after Trauma

Trauma events are generally when you have experienced or witnessed an event in which you have been injured or thought you were going to die, or someone else was injured or died.  After experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, we are likely to feel shaken and distressed for a while afterwards. Sometimes these reactions can persist for longer and it is at this stage that you might be diagnosed with post traumatic stress.

Symptoms you may experience include major depression, nightmares and sleep difficulties, feeling as though you are reliving parts of the experience all over again, distressing memories popping into your mind during the day and night, avoiding reminders of the traumatic events because they cause distress, developing phobias of reminders of the event, difficulties concentrating, anger and irritability problems, constantly looking out for danger, feeling detached from people. It can feel as though your life is just not the same anymore.

If this describes your experience then this course may be useful. This course runs over 6 weeks and will start to support you on your journey to recovery from PTSD.  It will help you understand the impact of trauma, and acquire skills that will help you feel more stable, for example around managing sleep and relaxation strategies.

Trauma specific treatment is not recommended when actively suicidal, self harming or if using drugs or alcohol dependently.  The course does not replace the need for trauma therapy but may help you develop skills to enable you to get the most out of therapy at a later stage.

Course details:

    • Each group will have between 8-10 people, who all have all experienced trauma.
    • The sessions are 2 hours long with a break in the middle – it’s important to arrive on time to get the most out of sessions.

    • We ask that you try to practice some of the skills at home between sessions to get the most out of the course.
