CBT for insomnia

Course aims:

The aim of this course is to help you understand what sleep is, what happens when it goes wrong. By the end of the course, you should be equipped to deal with your insomnia by using strategies and techniques to change unhelpful thoughts and behaviours that may be maintaining the sleep problems.

Who is this course for?

This course is for people whose main problem is insomnia or sleep issues. These might be not being able to fall asleep, waking frequently in the night and not being able to get back to sleep or waking too early in the morning. These issues might be causing daytime problems such as problems at work or relationship difficulties.

If you feel like your main problem is low mood or anxiety and you are experiencing sleep issues as a result, it may be worth you focusing on the mood issues first. However, if you have had successful treatment for low mood or anxiety and you are still experiencing sleep issues, or if you feel like you are experiencing these symptoms as a result of sleep issues, this course might be helpful. This course may not be suitable for people experiencing frequent nightmares and sleep disturbance as a result of a traumatising event.

Sessions:

There are sessions, each lasting roughly 2 hours with a 15-minute break in the middle. There will be two facilitators to guide you through it. All the materials you’ll need to review the sessions each week are provided in a handout. We strongly recommend you set aside time each week to practice the skills at home between sessions for the course to be most effective.

Week 1: Education about sleep, tips to improve sleep and change bad sleep habits.
Week 2: Sleep restriction therapy and increasing sleep efficiency
Week 3: Stimulus control, increasing association with bed and sleep
Week 4: Relaxation and stress management
Week 5: Changing the way we think to improve sleep
Week 6: Maintaining progress and preparing for the future
