Managing Panic – Thursday Morning at 9:45am in the City Centre. Start date: 07 March FULLY BOOKED

Managing Panic – This course runs for 6 weeks on a Thursday Morning at 9:45am in the City Centre. Start date: 07 March

Course aims:

This course is suitable for people who experience panic attacks and/or are anxious about the possibility of having a panic attack. It will:

  • Help you understand panic and how the way we think and behave can affect how we feel both emotionally and physically.
  • Teach you a range of skills and techniques to help you control and manage your panic.

About the sessions

The course consists of six 90 minute hour sessions:

  • Session 1: You will be given a general overview of the course. We then look at what panic is, why we might experience panic and how panic feels.
  • Session 2: You will be shown how to monitor your thoughts and physical symptoms, which will give you an increased awareness of what keeps panic going.
  • Session 3: You will be encouraged to explore the physical symptoms of panic and will learn how to manage these.
  • Session 4: You will be introduced to ways of identifying the unhelpful thoughts that maintain panic, and we will look at strategies that help to create more balanced thinking.
  • Session 5: You will learn how to recognise and change the unhelpful behaviours that can keep panic going.
  • Session 6: Finally, you will have some time to reflect on the course as a whole and think about how the skills you have learnt will prepare you for the future.

What to expect

You can wear your ordinary clothes – there is no dress code.

You might want to bring a pen to write your own notes on the workbook.

There are likely to be about 10 other people on the course.

On arrival you will be greeted by the course leader. We generally sit in a circle of chairs or round a table, so you can pick a chair and sit down. The course leader will ask you to give your name to sign you in (necessary for health and safety reasons).

We try to start and finish the courses on time. If you are late, don’t worry. Just arrive when you can. It’s better to come late than to miss the session completely. Traffic happens! (Please note: there are some venues where you will not be able to get in to the course if you are late. If this is the case it will say on the venue information sheet that you will be sent once you have booked onto a course).

If you need to leave early let the course leader know on arrival, but feel free to leave when you need to without asking permission.

The course is intended to be informal and enjoyable. It is taught using handouts, which form a personal journal for you to keep. Each week you get the next section of the workbook. You don’t have to remember to bring the previous week’s handouts with you.

We stick to a few teaching methods which are comfortable for the majority of people. Please, feel free to ask questions and join in with discussions during the sessions. There are discussions about some tools and techniques but if you don’t want to talk you don’t have to.

The workshops are psycho-educational, which means they are largely based around teaching you skills to manage your panic more effectively. There are opportunities for you to practice the skills learnt in sessions at home. It is advised that you attempt the suggested tasks at home as this will help you to generalise the skills to your everyday life. However, the focus will remain on the teaching of skills rather than the exploration of personal histories, which might be more appropriate for individual or group counselling sessions.
