Managing Life and Work Stress

This course runs for 6 weeks on a Tuesday Evening at 6pm in Lawrence Hill.

Course aims:

This course is aimed at people who would like to cope more effectively with stressful situations at home or at work (for example work overload, difficult relationships, pressure from domestic or caring responsibilities). It will help you:

  • To become more aware of what stress is, what causes stress for you and how it affects you
  • To develop goal-setting and problem solving strategies to manage the stressful situations that you can control
  • To learn effective coping strategies so that you can deal with stressful situations that you can’t control
  • To build a “tool kit” of practical stress reduction techniques

About the sessions

The course consists of 6 x 1.5 hour sessions:

  • Session 1 = Building self-awareness; looking at what stress is, what maintains it and how it affects you, so that you can develop your own stress management strategy.
  • Session 2 = We will explore some effective tools for goal setting and problem solving, so that you can take action where action is possible. You will also be given some top tips for de-stressing.
  • Session 3 = You will learn to identify and manage stressful thinking and develop a mindful perspective on your thoughts and feelings. We will look at the importance of self-compassion and self-soothing, and there will be tips on soothing and calming yourself.
  • Session 4 =Looking after yourself. We will explore the effect of exercise, healthy eating, good sleep and relaxation in managing stress. You will have a chance to assess your lifestyle and perhaps decide on some positive changes that you would like to make. We’ll also look at some simple relaxation and re-energising techniques.
  • Session 5 = Common causes of stress: Managing difficult relationships. You will learn strategies to help you manage anger and communicate calmly and assertively.
  • Session 6 = Common causes of stress: Managing time and creating a balanced life. We will look at some practical techniques to help you make the most of your time. We will also review what we have covered on the workshop and consider ways of maintaining progress and preventing relapse.

What to expect

You can wear your ordinary clothes – there is no dress code

You will be given a section of the workbook each week; you might want to bring a pen to write your own notes

There are likely to be about 10 other people on the course.

On arrival you will be greeted by the course leader, who will ask you to give your name to sign you in (necessary for health and safety reasons).

We try to start and finish the courses on time. If you are late, don’t worry, just arrive when you can. It’s better to come late than to miss the session completely. (Please note: there are some venues where you will not be able to get in to the course if you are late. If this is the case it will say so on the venue information sheet that you will be sent once you have booked onto the course)

If you need to leave early let your session leader know on arrival, but feel free to leave when you need to without asking permission.

The course is intended to be informal and enjoyable. We stick to a few teaching methods which are comfortable for the majority of people. Please feel free to ask questions and join in with discussions during the sessions, but you won’t be forced to talk if you don’t want to
